Human Factors in Clinical Practice: Designing Out Error

1. Program overview

Human factors is the science of fitting the work to the person rather than expecting the person to absorb bad design. This course applies it directly to clinical settings: the cognitive cost of interruption during medication rounds, look-alike packaging, alarm fatigue, handover under time pressure, and the effect of night shifts on judgement. You will learn to read a workspace and a workflow the way a human factors specialist does, spotting the conditions that make error probable long before anyone is hurt. The emphasis throughout is on changes a clinician or department lead can actually make.
