Radiation Protection for Non-Radiographers

For everyone who works near imaging equipment without being trained in it.

Radiation Protection for Non-Radiographers

Program overview

Theatre staff, cardiac catheter laboratory teams, dental staff, orthopaedic teams and ward nurses are routinely exposed to ionising radiation without ever receiving radiation protection training — which is written for radiographers. This course covers the essentials for everyone else: how radiation causes harm, dose and its measurement, justification and optimisation, the practical trio of time, distance and shielding, scatter behaviour in an operating theatre, protection during mobile and fluoroscopic imaging, pregnancy, and dosimetry.

Why this program

Written for the staff radiation training usually skips

Scatter behaviour taught practically

Covers theatre, cath lab, dental and ward mobile imaging

Includes pregnancy and dosimetry

Who it is for

Program objectives

  • Explain how ionising radiation causes biological harm
  • Describe dose quantities and typical exposures in context
  • Apply the principles of justification and optimisation
  • Use time, distance and shielding effectively
  • Predict scatter behaviour in a procedure room
  • Apply pregnancy precautions and dosimetry requirements

Learning outcomes

  • Apply time, distance and shielding to a described procedure
  • Predict the highest-scatter position in a described theatre setup
  • Evaluate a described practice against optimisation principles
  • Select appropriate protective equipment for a described role
  • Apply pregnancy precautions to a described situation
  • Interpret a dosimetry report at a basic level
