Preventing Healthcare-Associated Infections: CLABSI, CAUTI, SSI and VAP

The four device- and procedure-associated infections that cause most preventable harm.

Preventing Healthcare-Associated Infections: CLABSI, CAUTI, SSI and VAP

Program overview

Four infection types account for the majority of healthcare-associated infection burden, and all four are substantially preventable through consistent bundle practice. This course takes each in turn — central line associated bloodstream infection, catheter associated urinary tract infection, surgical site infection and ventilator associated pneumonia — covering pathogenesis, the evidence-based prevention bundle, insertion and maintenance practice, the decision to remove a device, and the surveillance definitions used to measure each. Practical throughout, with an emphasis on the maintenance steps that are most often skipped.

Why this program

Each infection taken from pathogenesis to prevention bundle

Emphasises maintenance, where compliance actually fails

Includes surveillance definitions and how rates are calculated

Device removal treated as a prevention intervention

Program objectives

  • Describe the pathogenesis of each of the four major device- and procedure-associated infections
  • Apply the evidence-based prevention bundle for each infection type
  • Identify the maintenance steps most often omitted in practice
  • Explain the role of prompt device removal in prevention
  • Interpret standard surveillance definitions for each infection
  • Calculate and interpret a device-associated infection rate

Learning outcomes

  • Apply the correct prevention bundle to a described clinical scenario
  • Identify bundle non-compliance in a described insertion or maintenance episode
  • Differentiate colonisation from infection using surveillance definitions
  • Calculate a device-associated infection rate from given data
  • Evaluate a device for continued clinical need
  • Recommend targeted improvements for a unit with a raised infection rate
