Endoscope Reprocessing and Tracking

The highest-risk reprocessing task in the hospital, taught step by step.

Endoscope Reprocessing and Tracking

Program overview

Flexible endoscopes are difficult to clean, impossible to steam sterilise, and implicated in transmission incidents worldwide. Their reprocessing is correspondingly prescriptive and correspondingly often deviated from. This course covers the full cycle: bedside pre-cleaning, leak testing, manual cleaning including channel brushing, high-level disinfection and automated reprocessor operation, drying and storage, traceability linking scope to patient, and the response to a reprocessing failure or suspected transmission.

Why this program

Step-by-step through the highest-risk reprocessing task

Emphasises the steps most often skipped

Includes traceability scope-to-patient

Covers failure and suspected transmission response

Who it is for

Allied HealthNurseQuality OfficerPhysician

Program objectives

  • Perform bedside pre-cleaning correctly and explain why it is decisive
  • Conduct leak testing and interpret the result
  • Execute manual cleaning including channel brushing to standard
  • Operate high-level disinfection and automated reprocessing safely
  • Apply correct drying and storage practice
  • Maintain traceability linking each scope to each patient

Learning outcomes

  • Sequence the reprocessing steps for a described endoscope
  • Identify the consequence of an omitted pre-clean or delayed reprocessing
  • Interpret a leak test result and select the correct action
  • Evaluate a described storage arrangement for adequacy
  • Apply traceability requirements to a described procedure list
  • Plan the response to a suspected reprocessing failure
